On October 4, 2026, the competition for the Janusz Grzeszczuk Academic Polish Marathon Cup will take place for the third time as part of the Pozna\u0144 Marathon. The classification is open to students up to 30 years old, PhD students, doctoral school participants, and full-time university employees who are registered for the 25th Pozna\u0144 Marathon.<\/p>\n

A cash prize of 3,000 PLN awaits the female and male winners of the classification. The award ceremony and presentation of prizes will take place after the conclusion of the 25th Pozna\u0144 Marathon.<\/p>\n

We also encourage you to read the classification regulations. The Academic Polish Marathon Cup is organized by the Academic Sports Association (AZS) in Pozna\u0144. The main prizes are funded by FOOD & FRIENDS magazine and the Transfer Pricing Institute.<\/p>\n
Janusz Grzeszczuk was a well-known figure in the track and field community for over 60 years. In 1965, representing AZS Pozna\u0144, he won the Polish Championship in the 800-meter race. He represented Poland multiple times at numerous international events. After finishing his competitive career, he became a coach for the AZS Pozna\u0144 club as well as the Polish youth and junior national teams. Among his trainees were medalists of national and European championships.<\/p>\n
In subsequent years, as an amateur and running promoter, he competed in the most important marathon races across five continents. He completed marathons in New York, Boston, Chicago, Berlin, London, Athens, Sydney, and Buenos Aires, as well as the Two Oceans Ultramarathon in Cape Town.<\/p>\n
The patron of the Academic Polish Marathon Cup made a great contribution to sports development, the promotion of Pozna\u0144, and, above all, an active lifestyle. For many years, he was an academic teacher, director of the Department of Physical Education and Sports at the Pozna\u0144 Academy of Economics, and a member of both the Regional Board of AZS Pozna\u0144 and the central authorities of the Academic Sports Association.<\/p>\n
For several decades, he carried out activities promoting sports and running among thousands of outdoor activity enthusiasts, whom he tirelessly motivated to lead a healthy lifestyle. Following the success of the Polish Academic Cross-Country Championships he organized in the 1980s, and the World Academic Cross-Country Championships held in 1990 in Pozna\u0144’s Wola district, he initiated a series of international events at Lake Malta. He was a pioneer of mass running events in Pozna\u0144, which saw the participation of thousands of amateurs ranging from school and university students to seniors. Alongside novice runners, competitors from dozens of countries\u2014often outstanding athletes\u2014appeared at the start line, and the guests of honor included prominent sports personalities and Olympic champions.<\/p>\n
The work of Janusz Grzeszczuk, an honorary member of the Academic Sports Association, was recognized at both national and regional levels. He was awarded, among others, the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Medal of the Centenary of Regained Independence, and the Medal of the Polish Olympic Committee for services to the Polish Olympic Movement. In 2017, the Marshal of the Greater Poland Voivodeship honored him with the “Sports Personality of the Year” award, followed by the title of “Super-Senior of Pozna\u0144 Sports” granted by the Mayor of Pozna\u0144.<\/p>\n
The patron of the Academic Polish Cup passed away in 2023 at the age of 83. In 2024, the Pozna\u0144 city authorities approved a proposal by AZS Pozna\u0144 and the University of Economics to honor the memory of this outstanding athlete by organizing an academic marathon competition, which is held during our city’s flagship running event.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
